How to Think Like a Successful Real Estate Agent or Investor

A part of real estate training is teaching the agent or investor how to think like a successful agent or investor. The following list gives nine traits of a successful real estate agent that helps motivate future real estate agents and investors in real estate training classes so that they can start to see success in their future.

1. Know what motivates you

Successful investors always have a reason for everything they do. This is called their “Why” motivation. If they can’t give a reason for why they are doing something, then it is not worth doing. Think of children who go through a phase of always asking “why?” They won’t stop asking until they get an answer they understand. Even if you show them how to do what you’re asking, they still won’t do it until you answer “why”. This is because the “Why” motivates us more than the “How”. Knowing why we are doing something and having a reason for doing it is more important to us than just knowing how to do it.

When you discover what motivates you or your big “Why”, you can then find little “Why’s” or goals that will give you focus for completing an overall goal.

2. Develop a plan and goals

Investors and agents who are motivated will not be able to utilize their motivation if they do not have a plan of action with goals supporting the completion of the plan. That is why it is important to develop a plan or a set of goals that are high-level tasks to answering your big “Why” motivation. Successful investors know that a plan will bring success. They see how the goals they complete contribute to their overall success and they continue to set higher and higher goals. These investors realize their dreams by following and accomplishing their goals through a series of organized tasks. The completion of tasks and goals provide power to why they are working.

3. Develop and strive to complete a list of possibilities

Because successful investors know that they can use a plan with goals to work toward a motivation, they start to believe in creating their own possibilities. For real estate investors who believe this way, anything is possible because they literally make it happen. By having a set of goals and tasks to complete plans, they can work toward creating new possibilities that may not have been available if they had not tried. As goals are accomplished, you will begin to realize that you can make anything happen through your own motivation, planning, and completion of tasks and goals.

4. Take action to make possibilities happen

Successful investors believe in action and stay motivated by action. The more you act, the more you are required to act. The action you take should follow the plan, goals, and tasks so that all actions go through a checklist of tasks that you complete over a given period of time. Without the plan, goals, and tasks, efficient action cannot happen because it will not help you succeed in completing a goal, a plan, or in answering the “Why” question.

5. Have no fear

The investors are not afraid to take action because they have a plan with goals and tasks. The plan, goals, and tasks give them a defined list of steps to complete every day, every week, or every month. Because they know the plan and have broken it down into a shortlist of goals and tasks, the plan is not unfamiliar to them and can be completed over a given period of time.

6. Believe that all work is progress

Successful investors believe that any work they do for a plan (i.e., successful work and work that failed) is progress. They believe this because they have gained experience regardless of whether they were successful or whether they failed. Where progress is similar to taking action, it also gives that real estate investor experience in completing tasks and in completing alternate tasks to fix failed tasks.

7. Strategize in order to be competitive

Investors who are competitive use their plan as an overall strategy for accomplishing their “Why” motivation. These investors love their work and make things happen in order to remain competitive and follow their strategy. They know the difference between how you play a game (i.e., with the rules) and how you win a game (i.e., with a strategy).

8. Set your own standards

Investors who are experienced at following a strategy set their own standards based upon their personal goals and tasks and their experience. The standards they set are in providing the best possible service to the customer and in hiring the best possible people to work for the agency. In providing the best possible service to the customer, they set standards for confidentiality, full disclosure, customer requirements gathering, analyzing the market, and researching the market. In hiring the best possible people for their real estate agency, they look for people who are like-minded in their approach to being an agent or investor and accomplishing plans goals, and tasks.
